Papers, 1847-1855.

Collection consists of two volumes of letters received by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Walsh of Stuyvesant Falls, NY, the bulk of which were written by their son Thomas in New York and China, and others from their sons John and Richard in New York and Brooklyn. The earlier letters in the collection discuss family news and finances, Thomas' work at Cary & Company in New York, some news from Europe and social activities. In 1850 Thomas travels to China to work as an agent for A.A. Low & Brother, buying, selling and trading tea, silk and other Chinese goods. His letters generally focus on family concerns, but also offer brief descriptions of life and events in Canton and Shanghai.
